Group work method
- Each group should consist of 7 to 10 participants.
- Time: 20 minutes.
- Task: Answer the questions below and then share and discuss the results of your work with all participants in no more than 5 minutes through a nominated spokesperson.
Group 1: What are the key steps that need to be taken in order to benefit from the experiences of countries that have made progress in the field of independent living and deinstitutionalization? List the three most important actions and define the responsibilities of governments, civil society, particularly organizations of persons with disabilities, and international sponsors.
Group 2: What are the main social and attitudinal challenges that stand in the way of persons with disabilities exercising their right to independent living, and institutionalization being abandoned and replaced with inclusive community-based services? List the top three social and attitudinal challenges and propose practical solutions to overcome them.
Group 3: What are the most important preliminary steps to be taken at the community and family level before beginning to amend national policies and legislation and bring them in line with the provisions of the Convention on independent living and alternatives to institutionalization? List two steps at the community level and two steps at the family level, briefly explaining how they should be implemented and why they are necessary as proactive steps.
