Social Development Bulletin: Persons with Disabilities in Emergencies Vol. 5; Issue No. 1

The Arab region faces complex and growing humanitarian emergencies. Conflict, instability and violence in several Arab countries have had catastrophic consequences for civilian populations. Moreover, the number of natural disasters in the Arab region has tripled over the past three decades, causing widespread human suffering and massive economic losses. Such emergencies cause a substantial increase in the number of persons with disabilities. People incur permanent disabilities as a result of, for example, violence or falling debris. Injuries lead to disability because of the lack of access to essential health services.

This bulletin explores the situation of persons with disabilities in emergencies in the Arab region. It examines the role of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; and proposes recommendations to better ensure the dignity and well-being of persons with disabilities in times of crisis.
