Key messages

  1. Despite the legal and institutional reforms and initiatives undertaken in Egypt, persons with disabilities experience many barriers in accessing the labour market.
  2. Using the Egypt Labor Market Panel Survey (ELMPS) 2018, this study shows that disability is associated with a lower probability of participation and employment in the Egyptian labour market.
  3. When employed, persons with disabilities are typically found in low-level, low-paid jobs, precarious employment, or segregated from the mainstream labour market.
  4. Enhancing employment of persons with disabilities requires a holistic approach to promote their employment, entrepreneurship and micro-enterprises, to enhance international cooperation and technology transfer, and to improve the collection of high-quality data on disability.
